The financial crisis has changed everything -- including the CDU. For decades, the party has stood for a free market economy and competition, while opposing any nationalisation of enterprise. But in recent weeks, the party has thrown out many of these principles. Today, polls show only 35 percent of Germans would vote for the CDU and the party is performing badly in state elections. Even within its own ranks, many are wondering what's going on and they're looking to their leader Angela Merkel to supply some answers. But these days, addressing the CDU's identity crisis isn't her first priority.
