Very good speech in Limerick Absolute Hotel by Paul Murphy TD How many politicians out there could get a standing ovation these days? Public Meeting with speaker Paul Murphy TD from Anti-Austerity-Alliance - "We Won't Be Bullied" 2015/02/17 Description: Paul Murphy TD is to speak at a public meeting in Limerick's Absolute Hotel organised by the Anti Austerity Alliance next Tuesday evening. The AAA TD was arrested this week over his involvement in an anti water charges protest in Jobstown last year and will talk about the ongoing arrests of people involved in that protest, the next steps for the campaign against water charges and the 'need for a political alternative to the corrupt establishment'. So far 12 people who were at the protest last November have been arrested, four every morning at around 7am for the last three days. Indications are this may continue for possibly another week. The arrests began on Monday morning when Paul Murphy and two AAA councillors, along with another political activist were arrested, and released with out charge. A further 8 people have since been arrested including a fourteen year old this morning. The AAA have condemned the arrests as "political policing" and an attempt to "criminalise protesters and the very idea of protest". Paul Murphy TD said: "These series of morning raids on anti water charge protesters and teenagers is an attempt to intimidate the water charges movement, and the community of Jobstown. Every morning now they are sending up to 30 Gardai into Jobstown to arrest another four protesters, take them in for questioning and then releasing them without charge. It is a very sinister development, an example of political policing, with police resources being used to try undermine the water charges movement and the Anti Austerity Alliance in particular. This must be opposed by everyone who defends the right to peaceful protest, and civil disobedience." Mr. Murphy will also speak on the next steps for the water charges movement, which he said is now "entering the crucial phase". "These arrests come just after the latest registration deadline for Irish Water, which was a disaster for them. And crucially it comes only weeks before the bills are sent out. The establishment are scared that people will stand together and defy the government by boycotting the bills. They know if people do that, the charge can be made uncollectable, and fatally undermined. That is what we must now do: organise mass non-payment of the bills." Cllr. Cian Prendiville appealed for people to come out to the public meeting to "show solidarity with those facing attack and show that Limerick stands with Jobstown, and against political policing and intimidation". He said the meeting is "a fantastic opportunity to see Paul Murphy TD speak, and to get involved with the movement that has the political establishment so worried. The AAA has only been around for little over a year, and already we have the political establishment rattled. They are disgusted that we unashamedly stand for mass non-payment of the water charges, and civil disobedience, that we reject not just this or that cut back, but the entire austerity policy. They are scared that Ireland may follow Greece, where a small, radical anti-austerity alliance rose from obscurity to power. These attempts to cut us down, or criminalise us will not work, and I believe will backfire on the rotten political establishment in this country."
