Jury selection begins for man accused of shooting Warren Co. deputy, father

LEBANON, Ohio (WKRC) - Jury selection is underway in the case of a Warren County man accused of shooting a deputy and his own father. 

Mohammed Laghaoui faces aggravated murder, attempted murder, felonious assault and other charges.

Laghaoui is accused of shooting Deputy Katie Barnes as she responded to the Orchards of Landen apartment complex for a domestic violence call in June, 2016. She was shot in the stomach. Laghaoui is also accused of shooting his father in the hand as he tried to keep Laghaoui from coming back inside.

Attorneys are trying to select a jury from a pool of about 50 people.

Defense attorney Nadeem Quraishi has asked the prospective jurors about their opinions on the Islamic faith. He's asked if they think Muslims are prone to violence.

Prospective jurors were also asked about their views on law enforcement and firearms.

Before the trial, Laghaoui's attorneys made the case that their client wasn't competent. That was denied even though a psychiatrist says he suffers from severe mental illness.
