United Nations, New York, 24 June 2009 - The President of the United Nations General Assembly, Miguel D'Ecosto has opened the conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and Its Impact on Development by telling delegates that now is the time to turn egotism and greed into solidarity.

Mr D'Ecosto says the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) has proven the need for controls and corrections to be made to the current system. But he also added that they were not enough. According to him, "Stopping at controls and corrections of the model would demonstrate a cruel lack of social sensitivity, imagination and commitment to the establishment of a just and lasting peace."

In his speech at the opening session of the UN conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development, Mr D'Ecosto urged delegates to use this conference as a forum to discuss how best to build a new international system that "strives towards a new paradigm of social coexistence".
