ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The man who's been hired as interim Asheville police chief says he plans to do more listening than talking when he takes over in January. Steve Belcher, a retired Santa Cruz, California police chief, says he loves a challenge. Belcher will lead the department while the city of Asheville moves forward with a national search for the successor to Chief William Anderson. Anderson announced plans to retire after several controversies during his run as chief. Belcher will work closely with a consulting group that will assess the APD. Belcher caught up with News 13 via phone on Monday. "We'll look at issues," Belcher said. "I have talked to the city manager about and read in the paper. We'll be looking forward to talking to personnel inside the department and community leaders to see what they have to say and we'll try to make it a win-win for everyone if we can." Belcher says he has no interest in being the police chief long term, and plans to start Jan. 19.
