Licenciou-se em Engenharia Civil no Instituto Superior Técnico em 1977. O PhD em Engenharia de Sistemas Ambientais foi conferido por Virginia Tech em 1982. Recebeu o título de Agregado pela Universidade Nova de Lisboa em 1992. Foi Post-Doctoral Associate no Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) em 1983, Visiting Associate Professor em Virginia Tech e Cornell University em 1988-89, e Visiting Professor no MIT em 1998-99. António Câmara é actualmente Professor Catedrático da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
