An electric skateboard that can climb hills and travel at up to 20 miles per hour is being developed by a group of Stanford graduate students as an alternative form of transportation that's cheaper and more eco-friendly than a car and easier to use with public transit than a bicycle.

Built on a longboard skateboard, the Boosted Board weighs 12 pounds and can travel six miles on a single two-hour charge. Two brushless motors power its rear wheels using electricity from a 2,000-watt lithium battery. The skateboard's own kinetic energy is also converted into power for the battery by regenerative braking.

The Boosted Board is described as "the world's lightest electric vehicle" by its developers, who have raised $316,428 from 830 people so far in a Kickstarter campaign to fund production of the electric skateboard. Units from the first production run will be priced at at $1,199 and up.

Developers of the Boosted Board claim half of all trips people take in cars are less than 5 miles. The Boosted Board would be a cheaper and more eco-friendly mode of transportation for such trips.
