Pine needles are a good mulch to use because they stay loose. Magnolia trees tend to have the bottom branches come close to the ground. If you have not limbed up the tree to expose the ground underneath just let the leaves from the magnolia fall to the ground. They will be a natural mulch and you won’t see them through the foliage.
