USGBC's LEED version 4 Material Ingredients credit supports better-informed material choices by promoting ingredient disclosure and products optimized to avoid harmful chemicals. Dr. Lauren Heine, Co-Director of Clean Production Action, explains the GreenScreen® assessment method -- one of the LEED v4 approved optimization paths -- including its benchmarking approach and foundations in EPA's Design for the Environment program. She will also speak to some of the applications of chemical hazard assessment, including specification and the design and development of new chemicals, materials, and products. In addition, she will address some of the challenges of chemical hazard assessment such as dealing with data gaps, capturing important breakdown products, and making informed chemical choices with consideration of exposure and functional use.
