In old pure jack pine and black spruce forest shorelines, the beavers eat up their preferred food supply of poplar, and in some of our lakes in boreal northern Ontario, beaver are reduced to scraping inner bark from jack pine, which is starvation food. The oozing pitch (resin) makes superb fire starter for a ferro rod when scrapped into shavings. While we almost always have the super easy birch bark tinder available, an alternative is the easy pine pitch readily available along shorelines for us lake travelers, summer canoe tripping and winter trekking. (Video shot mid March 2012 during the spring melt).
