"Taqwa is something that we have come across many times in Qur'an, hadith, literature, & lectures, but it is unfortunately one of the most misunderstood terms. What is Taqwa? It is...http://youtu.be/PxIQGTsXTqA"

"Taqwa is that state of mind & spirit where a person is constantly vigilant to protect his soul from violating the laws of Allãh as outlined in the Qur’ãn & Sunnah of the Ma‘sumeen. Fear is not the meaning of taqwa, fear of Allah’s punishment is the end result of taqwa. It is not isolation but insulation; you do not run away from the environment rather you protect yourself against its evils."

"Many will translate Taqwa as fear of God. He isn't a monster who we should be fearing, rather we should fear His punishment. Or even better, we should fear his Justice. Because if he deals with us through justice, we're doomed. This is why we pray for His mercy, not His justice."

"Many people say 'Maulana, the environment here is bad, we're moving away even if the standard of living is lower.' They go to Qum, Najaf, Karachi, Lucknow, Dar-e-Salaam, Zanzibar. All these holy places masha'Allah. This isn't Taqwa. This is running away. Taqwa is training for you and your children, that wherever they are, they will protect their Imaan."

"After a North American tour in 1981, someone asked my late father 'Now that you've seen this place, do you think we should stay or go back?' He replied 'You can run away from the West, but where will you run from Westernization?' You cannot escape it. People even come back from Mecca corrupt, with the title of Al-Hajj masha'Allah."

"Ask someone who lives in a society with no access to alcohol if they've ever consumed, they will say 'No, never, Alhamdulillah.' Of course he hasn't, if he's never even had the opportunity. Now ask the same question to someone living here, who has the access, time, money, and privacy to consume. Saying no here despite all that is Taqwa, protection. Saying you never drank when it isn't available is one thing, let us put you somewhere else and then see."

"Taqwa is not isolation. Taqwa is insulation. Insulation of your soul."

"There are 4 levels of immorality. Committing sin, bragging about it, doing it publicly, and the worse being displaying it. Publicizing & promoting sins. What is the Qur'an talking about, how is it relevant to our lives today? You might leave tonight disappointed with me, but that is the demand of this mimber. Facebook. Yes when you get married you want to look like the best new couple out there. There is nothing wrong with getting pictures taken. For your own album & family. But then there's no hijab or modesty. Or dancing in weddings. The sin is done. But then it's being displayed for the world to see. Where is the Hayaa. Where is the Taqwa."
