Though twice purged by Mao for ideological moderation and economic pragmatism, Deng Xiaoping eventually succeeded him as China’s new ‘Paramount Leader’. Deng’s regime saw the emergence of China as the economic powerhouse we know today. As one historian comments: “During Mao’s final years it was ‘strong nation, poor population.’ With Deng it became ‘rich population: strong nation.’” His policies of gradual economic liberalisation, free trade agreements, and private ownership of land led to rapid economic growth. But the psychological effects of this ideological about-turn were complex. “Since 1949 we were told earning money was wrong – was criminal. Now we were told: ‘You must get rich, everyone must do their best to get rich.’ It came as a shock.” And not all of Deng’s policies were progressive. Worried about uncontrollable population growth, he instated the One Child Policy. And his brutal military response to the Tiananmen Square protests altered citizens’ view of the Communist Party forever. “Our government shouldn’t have done this to its people,” one journalist says, her voices breaking. “The 4th June, 1989 took away our faith in China.” Increasingly, dissenters claim the spirit of communism has been sacrificed on the altar of economic success. Can China’s phenomenal economic success outpunch such criticism? Les Films Grain de Sable - Ref 6396 Every week Journeyman offers a brand new documentary, fresh out of the cutting room.
