Graph an absolute value inequality from the parent graph

👉 Learn how to graph absolute value inequalities. An absolute value inequality is an inequality having the absolute value sign. The graph of the parent function of an absolute value inequality is a v-shaped graph starting from the origin above the x-axis and rising both sides of the y-axis and is symmetrical to the y-axis with the area inside the v-shape or outside the v-shape shaded depending on the inequality sign.

To graph an absolute value inequality, we first graph the parent function of the absolute value equation corresponding to the inequality and we then apply the necessary transformation(s) to the graph of the parent function to obtain the graph of the absolute value equation corresponding to the inequality. Next, we substitute a point inside the v-shape and a point outside the v-shape to the inequality in order to determine and shade the area satisfying the inequality.
