An endangered eastern black rhino was born at a Chicago Zoo this week for the first time in 24 years.

The male calf, weighting 27kg, appears to be healthy and bonding with his mother, Kapuki, an 8-year-old female.

The eastern black rhino was hunted almost to extinction, and in recent decades it has suffered near-catastrophic population declines, largely due to poaching. Its horns, skin and other body parts are believed by some to have medicinal value. Report by Andrea Lilly.
