(Episode 62) Six Mile Creek Natural Area in Ithaca, NY was created both to provide access to this beautiful valley for the public and to protect the water supply for the City of Ithaca. Dams were built farther upstream for reservoirs more than a century ago, and now it's time for the City to rebuild its water plant and address problems with its reservoir and supply pipes. Roxy Johnston, City Watershed Coordinator, explains the history of the two reservoirs and what is being done now. Meanwhile, Cornell University forest entomologist Mark Whitmore discusses the challenges we face with the approach of the emerald ash borer ("EAB") which is killing all ash trees, which are a major component of our forests and our urban landscape. [Note: Near the end of my program, I mention an unconfirmed report of EAB in Watkins Glen State Park in Schuyler County, which I have learned turned out to have been negative upon investigation. Please disregard.]
We also review the arrival of the destructive insect pest, the hemlock woolly adelgid, which is killing our hemlock trees, which are particularly important in our gorges and in the watershed. To find out much more about the hemlock woolly adelgid's impact here and elsewhere, see last week's episode of Walk in the Park (#61) on my vidblog at http://ithacafingerlakes.com/2013/11/14/gorge-tree-killer/. Join me, Tony Ingraham, as we visit parks in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, across the US, and around the world. As a former career state park ranger and environmental educator and interpreter, I am moved to share my love of our beautiful and historic landscapes. I have two series: Walk in the Park, a half hour show from public access TV in Ithaca, NY, and Park Minute. Each shows weekly. Find out more on my website http://walkinpark.com.
