It's an enormous task: According to the German government, more than 80,000 Afghan police officers will have to be trained if they are to provide the security necessary for the international security and assistance force in Afghanistan to withdraw from the country. German police officers have been training the Afghan police since 2002. But progress has been slow. Only a few dozen German police officers are in Afghanistan and many of them are not actually training officers, but are involved primarily with administrative work in the Afghan interior ministry. The work of German police officers in Afghanistan is still very dangerous and they can only be sent there on a voluntary basis. In addition to these problems, many experts believe the Afghan national police, still riddled with corruption, is an untrustworthy partner. Individual officers and even police chiefs are often suspected of working with warlords or even sympathizing with the taliban.
