ETHNIC MEDIA asking questions on various topics to Minister in SYDNEY.

Arun Jaitley, Indian Finance as well as Information and Broadcasting Minister who recently visited Australia, was a picture of perfect poise at the Ethnic Media Conference in Sydney, which was organised by the Australian government authorities. Here are excerpts from the proceedings.

**How much of a dent is the recent JNU episode to the image of India overseas?
I don’t think that it is an issue of a dent to the image. I believe no country, however liberal, can allow any activities that aim at breaking the nation. India is a country that allows free speech, but even under our Constitution sovereignty of the country comes first and foremost.

**How can the Indian diaspora contribute towards the Make in India campaign?
I think it’s about understanding the avenues available in India. There are several places where the Indians in Australia can contribute as was revealed though the recent budget. One such area is the food processing sector as also the mining sector. I think information needs to be given to those who are interested in a proper manner.

**Make in India campaign has been a huge success but there are certain sectors like Power, where there is interaction with various government boards. Will that be a problem?
Not at all. Power is one sector that is growing tremendously in India – both hydro and thermal as well as renewable. So, it is a field where substantial contributions can be made. Now the Indian Government has come up with the ‘Udai’ scheme where the state governments have been asked to take over significant part of the debt of the power companies. So, it’s a sector that has huge potential in the times to come.

**After three years of the Modi Government, what do you consider as your three greatest achievements?
I think the Government is decisive, the government has maintained a direction and the government has not committed any major mistake. Corruption has gone down significantly from the corridors of New Delhi and we are on a growth path.

**What are the challenges that lie ahead?
Fighting poverty, strengthening India’s agrarian sector and building the country’s infrastructure.

**What about the Human Development Index (HDI) as far as India is concerned?
A lot still needs to be done in India’s social sector. There is a huge amount of backlog and we need to invest heavily in the health sector. We have already taken some steps in the recent budget in this regard. There will soon be state-subsidized insurance policy for the poor, education facilities will be improved and there is a keen focus on the skill development of people at the grassroots level.

**When will the smart city project kick-off?
As many as 20 cities have been identified and the project is on course. Foreign Direct Investment has increased substantially after the Make In India campaign and the future holds much promise.
