On SEPT 26, 1961 Maxime Faget and Andre Meyer obtained a patent for An Aerial capsule emergency separation device. The patent disclosed technology that was used on the Mercury and Apollo craft, which was credited with saving the lives of two Soviet astronauts in 1983 when their launching pad caught fire just before takeoff . Max Faget was a truly essential genius of the early U.S. space program, whose innovations ushered the United States into the age of manned space flight. He designed the Mercury capsule's distinctive tapered shape with a protective heat shield over its blunted nose to protect it from the almost unimaginable heat of re-entry.
