it is well underway and wont be log before it is finished A NEW skate park will be built in Newport's Tredegar Park, city planners agreed. The facility will replace The Edge at Newport's International Sports Village, which will be demolished to make way for the Football Association of Wales' new home of Welsh football, which got the go-ahead last month. It will be built on the former pitch and putt golf area, near the tennis courts at the southern end of the park, which is near changing rooms, toilets, the children's play area and car park. It will be made from a concrete cast and will be similar in size and design to the NISV one and will be suitable for people of all ages and abilities. The area will be floodlit and the council expects it will used from 9am to 10pm daily. Gwent Police offered no objections to the plans but asked that appropriate crime prevention and security measures be put in place to minimise anti social behaviour. The authority expects the £175,000 attraction will draw in 10,000 visitors a year - an average of 27 skaters and bikers a day - from all over Newport and the wider area. Tredegar Park was the preferred location of hundreds of users who took part in a survey because toilets and staff were already in place and it has good transport links. It is hoped it will be completed in the summer after which the skate park at Spytty would be demolished to be replaced with a premium grass football pitch. Newport beat dozens of sites when it was chosen to host the FAW and Welsh Football Trust's National Football Centre project at Spytty.
