Are countries doing enough to counter the effects of climate change? Apparently not! The 2019 Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) shows that there is not enough political will to prevent the dangers of climate change 56 countries, which contribute to 90% of greenhouse gas emissions, were assessed for their climate protection performance. It measures how well countries are on track to meet the global goals of the Paris Agreement and keep temperature rise to below 2°C. No country performed well enough to qualify for the ranking of “very good” or take the top three places. Sweden, which ranked no. 4, was the best, followed by Morocco and Lithuania. Almost half of the G20 countries were placed at 'very low’ ranks with the USA and Saudi Arabia being the worst performers. India got a “good” rank of 11 while China was placed at a “medium” rank of 33. India has improved its rank because of its renewable energy performance and low levels of per capita GHG emissions. Will lack of political commitment lead us to a hostile world?
