Nicole A. Velasco is a third generation resident born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. She graduated from Princeton University in 2008 with a BA in English. Nicole serves as the Executive Secretary of the Neighborhood Commission and is the youngest appointed Cabinet member of the Caldwell Administration. In 2012, Nicole ran for the Hawaii State House of Representatives in her community of Kalihi, District 30. With a narrow and controversial loss of 120 votes, the outcome of Nicole's primary election reignited discussions about election reform. During the 2013 Legislative Session, a bill was written to address the concerns raised in Nicole's race. Newly introduced and the first of its kind, the bill was not expected to advance. However, the wisdom of the Legislature and the Governor ensured that the measure would pass and become Act 235, SLH 2013.
