I am particularly interested in how objects can serve as a bridge across temporal domains - a means of communicating with the past, experiencing the present and preparing for the future. When writing 'the traces that remain', I was interested in how the gramophone and shellac discs can be experienced in this way. The piece is a kind of montage - mosaic of memories, in which the sounds of raw electricity, industry and organic bodies are overlaid and recombined within an ambient, harmonic framework. These sounds, all of which are involved in the manufacture of shellac, are presented variously as a composite sonic image, and as separable sonic entities. The surface of the discs both reveal and distort these voices, and audibly trace the story of sound recording which is as much defined by insects and industry, as it is by recording artists."
