"When you're in exile you get homesick about every single detail to do with your homeland. Everyone has a daily life, full of minor details, but you don't value the small things until you are away from home, and then you really start to miss them. I've tried to make this restaurant not just as part of Syria but as a part of my home. When people visit the restaurant they should feel that it's like home, like their own house. With the food, they can remember their mother's, the dining table in their homes back in Syria. And with the photos they can remember details of their life back in their home country. I tried to use my memory to bring back something that can reduce the homesickness. Almost like medicine against pain."

18. SOUNDBITE (Arabic), Malakeh Jazmati, Syrian TV - chef:
"I try to cook the food like our mothers in Syria. But, sometimes we do make small changes to suit the taste of the German people. Some dishes we try to make a little less spicy or some a little less sour. But when a person form Syria comes in and eats the food they can immediately recognise the difference, they will say it is not like in the home country. So, in general, I try to make the food just like it is made in Syria to show our culture and our food to the German community. On this street, there are also a lot of tourists so we can even show off our culture to other nationalities as well. Not only Germans can eat the food but people from all over the world can come here and learn about our culture."

I don't consider this a foreign county because I actually see the future for myself and my family here. But, still, we miss a lot of things and coming to places like this can connect us to our Syrian home country."
