Title: Concurrent Object Oriented Programming Speaker: Bertrand Meyer Date: 11/15/2018 Abstract The future of programming is parallel. We have run out of ways to make processors faster, and instead we have to use many of them. Programming techniques and languages have not followed. In the words of a report by the National Research Council, parallel programming still requires “heroic programmers.” This webinar is focused on making parallel and concurrent programming accessible, even to the non-heroes among us. In fact, programming of any kind used to be the preserve of heroes, but progress in software technology made it possible to produce quality programs on a routine basis using well-documented engineering techniques such as (among others) OO principles. We will see how to extend this modern engineering approach to concurrent systems through the SCOOP mechanism (Simple Concurrent Object-Oriented Programming), an incremental extension to accepted OO techniques including Design by Contract. SPEAKER Bertrand Meyer, CTO of Eiffel Software; Professor, Politecnico di Milano and Innopolis University; ACM Fellow and Software System Award Recipient Bertrand Meyer is CTO of Eiffel Software and a professor at Politecnico di Milano and Innopolis University. He is the author of several best-sellers on software topics. His work on SCOOP is supported by a Euro 2.5-million personal Advanced Investigator Grant of the European Research Council. He is an ACM Fellow and ACM Software System Award recipient. MODERATOR Elisabetta Di Nitto, Professor, Politecnico di Milano Vice-Chair, ACM SIGSOFT Elisabetta Di Nitto is Full Professor in the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria of Politecnico di Milano and Vice Chair of ACM SIGSOFT. In the past, she was a researcher at CEFRIEL, leading the software engineering area, as well as a visiting professor at the University of California, Irvine (USA). Her expertise lies in the area of software engineering and, in particular, of large-scale, open, service-oriented systems with a special attention to the techniques to make these systems self-adaptable to changes in the environment and in the performance of their distributed components, and to enable them to identify and incorporate new components at runtime. Recently, Elisabetta has been focusing on cloud computing and, in particular, how to design applications that can run on multiple clouds in order to limit vendor lock-in and to increase availability and reliability of such applications. She has published about 100 papers; chaired, co-chaired, and keynoted multiple international conferences; and served on the editorial boards of IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, SOCA Journal, Journal of Software: Evolution and Process, and PeerJ Computer Science. In addition to serving on the SIGSOFT Executive Committee, Elisabetta is also a member of the IFIP working group on Services-oriented Systems (WG 2.14/6.12/8.10) and the QE LaB Advisory Board.
