turns out the thing had a bad hard drive altogether. what was weird is that i could boot up a linux disc and read the drive, get the files off and everything but could not boot or install OS X. my conclusion is that the board on the drive went bad. Toshiba hard drive was replaced with a new Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB, which is the same size as the original.
