A short tribute to a hiker who lost his life and to the brave CHP pilots who came to rescue... followed by some pics of the Whitney Portal trail the next day. While solo hiking The Whitney Portal trail on Oct. 6th 2011 I ran into another group of hikers and something wasn’t right. They told me friend had suffered from Cerebral Edema (due to the altitude) the previous night and died that morning. I was very empathetic and scrapped plans to help them carry him down to where a CHP chopper could land. I never met this man, however it was a sad day. A reminder that altitude CAN KILL.
