This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Using alternative currencies and principles of social exchange theory, it is possible to close the “social distance gap” to create a new kind
of sharing economy, building community-based wealth and promoting social impact in the process.

Nate Heasley is founder and director of Goodnikels, a nonprofit that promotes social enterprise and socially responsible business. He recently launched Goodnikels, a time-based alternative currency to support social impact organizations. Heasley has a B.A. from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Md., and a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law, where he was a Crowley

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
