Burning Dragon is a a pretty good shooter for the PC-98 and a great attempt at an Arcade-style shmup that received a more balanced, upgraded version a few months later by the name of "Burning Dragon Plus" with modified levels, re-arranged enemies and items, graphic changes, etc. Released in 1993 by Wiz (best known for their PC-98 Arcade ports of "Space Invaders" and "Pac-man", PC-98 versions of "Monster Maker 1 & 2", and original titles like "Burning Dragon" and "CRW / Counter Rebellion War"), Burning Dragon is a very challenging, comparatively long vertical shmup that draws some elements from the popular "Raiden" series and adds side arms (options) and a charged shot that differs between your three main weapons: Wide Shot, Missile, and Laser. Gaining multiple power-ups will make your weapons stronger and you can also find stars hidden throughout the levels to increase your score. The game sports some great pixel graphics with destructible environments and lots of little details like water moving and even tiny people sprites running around in terror, as well as large detailed bosses and some pretty detailed mid-bosses as well. The one caveat is that the in-game visuals run at a lower resolution, though a few screens are displayed at the normal resolution. This was before the use of screen borders in shmups became a common occurrence, but it doesn't really take away much from the experience. The music and sound is good, albeit a little generic... it would not be a stretch to say it sounds like plenty of other shmups released before it, but it's there and it works. Going into the gameplay a little more, you have three primary weapons and three optional sides that range in power and spread. The optional weapons even have tracking abilities and the laser increases movement speed. These are all things you will need right away as the game wastes no time in assaulting you with massive waves of bullets. Optional weapons can protect you from a side attack once before being destroyed, but you die in one hit and checkpoints are not as plentiful as one might hope; it's particularly frustrating to die on a boss as you are often required to start back at an annoying point before the boss with minimal firepower, so learning the enemy patterns is a must to get anywhere in this game, and nine credits is not a whole lot to learn the ins and outs of this game... practice makes perfect -- it takes quite a bit of skill just to clear the first level. Since there are already videos of the game, the opening sequence, attract mode and basic gameplay will suffice. This is a video of the game in action.
