East Germany's Heinrich Stoehr prevented a clean sweep by home competitors on the second and final day of the fifth Shoriki Judo Cup in Tokyo on Sunday (11/1). He captured the open category for superheavyweights, defeating Japan's Naoya Ogwa in the final. Elsewhere Japanese fighters lived up to their formidable reputation, capturing all but one of the seven titles over the two days of the tournament. The home domination was reflected in the finalists for the 65 and 78 kilogram gold medals. All four competitors were Japanese. At the lighter weight, Kenju Maruyama defeated Masahiko Okuma, while Fumitaka Kaburagi got the better of Ryoichi Matsuda to win the 78 kilogram crown. Success for Japan was repeated in the 95 kilogram final. Japan's Akito Kanemaru won for the second year in succession, beatin the challenge of Evgeny Pechurov of the Soviet Union.
