In this Race and Difference Colloquium lecture, Megan Ming Francis (assistant professor of political science, University of Washington) will present on her multiple-award winning 2014 book, "Civil Rights and the Making of the Modern American State." This book tells the story of how the early campaign against state sanctioned racial violence of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) shaped the modern civil rights movement. The James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race and Difference supports research, teaching, and public dialogue that examine race and intersecting dimensions of human difference including but not limited to class, gender, religion, and sexuality. http://www.jamesweldonjohnson.emory.edu
