Pleasure, pain and elevation gain add up to the Annual Steamboat Lake Sprint Triathlon. The race was held at the Steamboat Lake State Park, 26 miles outside of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The race consists of a 1/2-mile swim, 12.4-mile bike and a 3.5-mile run. Breath as deep as you need in clean clear air with this picturesque mountain sprint triathlon. 5 waves of racers in this sold-out event went off without a hitch starting at 8:00am. With the water temperature at 70 degrees the wetsuits went on. With the air temperature just above 80 degrees and a clear blue sky, what more could you ask for? The bicycling part has you leave the park and head uphill; this short but steep hill strings out the racers and starts the legs to burning. The hills continue as the course is an out and back. But what goes up must come down and so fast that you have to scrub off a little speed to pull off the quick left turn back into the park. Transition to the run and it is back up that nasty hill one last time because the run is a loop that winds it way back to the start / finish line through the park. You run along single track back to the finish. Lots of vendors turned up to share their goodies. The mood of the race is festive with most folks staying at or near the park to take in a hike or an easy mountain bike ride to cap off their weekend.
