At the breeding ponds males far outnumber females, if a male manages to latch on to a female he embraces her with the help of specially adapted pads on his fingers. Toad spawn is laid in double strands and then wrapped around aquatic plants; it is easy to distinguish these strands of spawn from the clumped mass of frog spawn.
