Eddie Arcaro retired in the spring of 1962 as the leading money earning jockey of all time and in the top three by wins. While those marks have long since been passed, some of his records remain and are unlikely to be topped. Among them? Two Triple Crowns and 10 Jockey Club Gold Cups. His final win in New York’s premiere fall event was Kelso’s second victory in the race. It was called the “easiest victory of [Kelso’s] illustrious career,” by the New York Times following the race. Kelso, who had also won the New York Handicap Triple Crown earlier in the year, was named Champion Older Horse and picked up his second Horse of the Year crown.
