Once a week a school class in Spandau looks forwards to something special: the arrival of a real "Berliner" - an elderly lady and grandmother - who wants to help youngsters from deprived ethnic backgrounds, where German is hardly ever spoken, to get on in life and also find a job, as she teaches them the basics of German behavior. One of our reporters watched her taking on the tough task of preparing their applications for traineeships. Like her, volunteers do similar work at some 140 Berlin schools and day care centres, and their imput is highly praised.
