Loveland, Colorado. Cross Of The North, Cyclocross Race, present by the E2 Cycling Team. Sunday, December 16th, 2012. 53 bicycle-racing teams showed up for the second day of the 2012 Colorado State Cyclocross Championships. Categories for today's races are the Senior Men (SM) 3, SM 4, Senior Women (SW) Open, SW 4, Single Speed and the SM Open. Over the 2-day event some 227 racers will rip up the generally non-technical course. The action locations where most of the folks watched the racing action were from the top of the very steep run-up. This long, steep run-up, although ridden up by some of the top racers, was a test of strength and agility as the shoulder-to-shoulder race action had its fair share of contact. Another great place to watch the race was from the so-called BMX section where 'Air' was to be had. The light Cyclocross bicycles took to the air off of the short sharp humps. Great photo ops were to be had. For non-racers, a Cyclocross race is a blend of bicycle road racing and mountain biking. The Cyclocross bicycles look similar to a road bike but are generally beefier. The brakes are stronger with the canter leaver design, soon to be replaced with disc brakes. And there is no suspension like a mountain bike. Images of Cyclocross racers are usually mud covered faces and bodies with just teeth showing through the grime. But this year's race was dusty-dry. I had hoped that some snow would dust the course but not this weekend. The 'Matrix' was added to the course, this section had the racers zigzagging, left right left right through a tight dusty gauntlet of barrier netting. Racers that came into this section hot and heavy and with a little too much front brake generally slid out causing a logjam effect on the racers behind them while the racers ahead just took off. The tangled barrier netting at the end of the day supports that theory. There are just a couple of more races before the hibernation of winter and I will be there, fingers crossed.
