Personal rant,

Being part of the generation that's going to see a lot more animals becoming extinct than say, all the previous ones, infuriates me more than I'll ever be able to convey properly. Definitely in these times of 'economic downturn', religious strife and a media that seems more bent on trying to keep people in their sofas instead of on their feet and actively participating, you can bet your ass the Irriwaddy is just 'one of those species' that would have been long gone, if it hadn't been for a few very hardworking and dedicated people. Unfortunately even with its current protection status and local initiatives trying to boost the population, there are greater forces at work here.

The Mekong River is becoming an irreparable dump thanks to developing countries trying to follow the American and European example of obsessing over growth and development. Cheap labor, little enforced regulation and even less awareness on toxicity in agriculture, aquaculture and sewage are fueling a rapid expansion glued together by corruption and smiling faces making sure everything is 'all right'. Not to mention the multiple dams which have been, or are either being built by China, Laos and Vietnam.

If you'd like to do something: get informed and educate others. If the Irriwaddy is too little a cause for you, you can look up Sea Shepherd, The Plastic Soup, acidification of oceans, overfishing, The Environmental Justice Foundation, WWF, Greenpeace, The Black Fish and Bite Back.

Sea First and EVA if you're Dutch or Belgian.

Well?
