The top liquid in the graduated cylinder is mineral oil, and the bottom liquid is water (pink). A piece of sodium is placed into the graduated cylinder it doesn't react in the oil, but it does in the water. The sodium reacts with the water to produce sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. The hydrogen gas pushes the sodium up into the mineral and the sodium stops reacting until it sinks back down into the water. ScienceFix.com Producer: Darren Fix
