The Democrats had won 204 seats in the American House of Representatives early on Wednesday and were on course for a majority, but their 'blue wave' of support broke short of the Senate, where Republicans were forecast to maintain their grip on power. The result is a blow to Donald Trump who will now have to preside over a divided Washington, with Democrats vowing to frustrate his populist political agenda. Winning the House also means they gain control of several committees which could now be used to launch investigations into the President and subpoena the tax records he refused to release during the 2016 election. The Democrats also lost key governor's races, including in Florida where Ron DeSantis beat Andrew Gillum.
