Injection to block the greater occipital nerve with local anesthetic can be performed for relief of muscle ache and headache with great success. There are other nerves that can be blocked for headache or migraine relief, including the lesser occipital nerve, the supraorbital nerve, and the supratrocholear nerve. This simple procedure is underused for relief of acute head pain and migraine. It requires minimal training for most physicians and is perfect for Neurologists, Family Physicians, and Emergency Physicians.
