KBA asks courts to suspend 0.05% excise duty to transact Ksh500,000 and above

The Kenya Bankers Association has filed a suit seeking to suspend the implementation of the 0.05% Excise Duty on transactions exceeding 500,000 shillings. The banks, through their umbrella body, say that the National Treasury's directive is unconstitutional as it was not subjected to public participation. They claim that the government did not provide enough information prior to implementing the duty. KBA argues that the computer software in use by banks are not configured to support the charges that the 2018/19 Budget statement stipulated.
