A move to add Minnesota to the National Popular Vote Interstate compact was blocked in a Republican controlled House committee on a 6-10 party-line vote on Thursday. The compact, which has the support of 10 states and the District of Columbia, commits the states to cast their electoral college votes for whichever presidential candidate wins the national popular vote. The compact would go into effect when the electoral votes of its members totals 270 or more — the number needed to elect a president. Rep. Glen Gruenhagen (R) argued against the proposal calling it "mob democracy." He told the House Government Operations and Elections committee "Mob democracies according to our founding fathers soon crashed and burned as the larger groups of people exploited the smaller groups. We need to stick with the electoral college and we need to oppose such things that undermine it like the national popular vote."
