The first Victoria Cross medal to be awarded to a British Army soldier has been sold for a record two hundred and ten thousand pounds. It was presented to a sergeant for two acts of heroism during the Crimean War. He ended his career a major in 1855 and today his descendents put the medal up for auction, along with the cannon ball that cost him his arm.
