A full to capacity Passenger train #662 from Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam (Ootacamund) chugs into Coonoor on March 26, 2009, powered by a coal-fired Swiss built steam engine 37392-X, pushing its load of four new coaches - rebuilt on vintage chassis. The Station Manager Chandralingam is seen waving a green flag as the train enters the station, and Guard Ivan Baxter is seen emerging from the train after it entered the station. The meter-gauge Nilgiri Mountain Railway is now 111 yrs old and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. V.M.Govind Krishnan's book: "NMR [Nilgiri Mountain Railway]-From Lifeline to Oblivion", documents the efforts of the public to thwart the moves of the Indian government to dismantle this unique railway, and keep it in running condition.
