I-40 Slope Work to Cause Delays

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. -- Starting Monday, DOT crews are removing trees from the rock slope to help prevent rock slides on I-40 at the Harmon Den exit. The DOT says work will begin about a half hour after sunrise until 10 a.m. During those hours, there will be rolling road blocks in both directions, with delays up to 30 minutes. Despite the potential delays, travelers say it's worth it. "Coming down from Ohio there's some really big rocks that are down along the side of the road. We did notice that. And we even mentioned you know if one of those hit you you're gone, you're dead. So it's probably a good idea," Mary Haldeman said, who's traveling from Ohio. "In the past I have heard a lot of times it's been closed down because of the rock slides, but I haven't had any issues any issues yet. Working in the morning is great because that way, most people travel in the afternoon and evening," Mike Hunter said who traveling from Charlotte. The work is expected to take several days and is part of a $6.5 million project to remove potential rock slide hazards. Once completed, the new slope is expected to be state of the art and in compliance with the latest safety standards much like slopes on I-26 in Madison County. If the timing will affect your plans driving from Asheville to Knoxville, the suggested detour is I-26 to I-81 south near Johnson City, Tennessee, and back to I-40.
