Amazon HQ2 cities could see Seattle's growing pains

(14 Nov 2018) As New York City and the Washington, D.C. area wait for Amazon to build its split East Coast headquarters, those two metropolitan regions can look to Seattle for some lessons learned. Amazon, which began in Seattle, has grown to more than 45,000 workers, changing the entire South Lake Union neighborhood from a former industrial area to towering office buildings, bustling with activity during the workday. Amazon's hiring spree also spurred other tech companies to expand or move to Seattle, creating big pool of well-paid technology jobs. But the growth came at a rapid pace and has had impacts on Seattle's traffic and housing. Housing sale prices and rentals skyrocketed during the boom. And over stressed mass transit features packed buses and streets and freeways are constantly clogged. The company will receive more than $2 billion in tax credits and other incentives. New York is forking over more than $1.5 billion, while Virginia and Arlington are offering about a third of that — $573 million.
