Turkey-based energy researcher on waiver for Ankara from US sanctions on Iran

(6 Nov 2018) A Turkey-based energy researcher on Tuesday said Turkey and the US "will find common points" that will allow Ankara to continue importing oil from neighbouring Iran past the waiver period granted to a few countries following the resumption of US sanctions against Iran. According to Emin Danis, research and strategy Director at the Turkey-based Global Energy Research Partners, Iranian imports cover 45 percent of Turkey's crude oil needs, and that Iranian oil plays an "important role" in Turkey's energy supply. Danis said Ankara did not want to be part of "this crisis" and said Turkey and the US had many common interests in the region. "That's why Turkey expects peaceful solutions for this problem," he said. The Trump administration's tough new sanctions on Iran took effect on Monday but eight major importers of Iranian oil were spared from immediate penalties. The US is allowing Greece, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Turkey to continue purchasing Iranian oil as long as they work to reduce imports to zero. The sanctions target Iran's energy, financial and shipping sectors and are aimed at crippling the country's economy following President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal. The measures restore all the US sanctions that had been lifted under the accord that gave Iran billions of dollars in sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear programme. Despite being granted a waiver, Turkey's president earlier on Tuesday criticised the resumption of sanctions, calling it a destabilising step. Recep Tayyip Erdogan also said the sanctions contravene international law and diplomacy.
