Doing this posture well places you in a precarious position.
You must stand on your hands with your feet and get your weight forward to a point of imbalance and yet your hands are trapped under you feet and thus you cannot use them should you fall.
Many people attempt to avoid this precarious position by avoiding risk, by keeping the hips and spine too far back and putting a disproportionate amount of their weight in their heels. But the benefits of this asana are to be found in tapping your inner gambler and that is the subject of this video.
I give you an exercise that can help you to shift your weight forward so that your spine elongates and projects forward. You also aim to shift your pelvis and legs forward so that they come onto the vertical axis (see yellow line in video). And you shift your weight out of your heels and into the balls of your feet so that you can press down on your hands evenly with your feet.
The exercise involves ESTABLISHING A CLEAR INTENTIONAL RHYTHM .
You rock back and forth several times and emphasize the phase of the rhythm where you are positioned dynamically forward. You breathe in as you rock forward and out as you go back. Also when you rock forward you straighten your arms pull up on your feet and elongate your spine. I’ve provided two arrows to show the forward direction that you are looking for along your spine and in your foot/hand foundation.
