Ex Secret Service director details bomb detection

(24 Oct 2018) A former deputy director of the US Secret Services says certain protocols have to be followed to determine the threat level of a suspicious package like the devices delivered to several high profile public figures in the last few days. Spriggs, now head of global security at The Associated Press, says that once a suspected package has been identified, the Secret Service then sets up a perimeter in order to mitigate the immediate danger. "Once the device is located, then a screening process is put in place. That is through X-ray machines and/or through electronic mechanisms by which you can detect exactly what is in the package." After the threat assessment is complete and the device is rendered inoperable, Spriggs says it is either detonated on scene or at an off site location. The best way to protect against a threat sent to a person or organisation like a news organisation or high profile individual, according to Spriggs, is to setup proper screening methods. Spriggs described bomb detection procedures on Wednesday as US investigators continued to examine the explosive devices sent to high-profile targets in Washington and New York this week.
