This old Manx song has words written by Hugh Stowell to a traditional Manx tune known as Wandescope. Like Mr Stowell, my home is where the heart is, so I added the last verse myself, which if it does not quite follow the pattern of his verses, has the same sentiment. Mannin veg villish veen or alternatively Vannin veg villish veen is an endearing phrase translating roughly as beautiful little sweet island and refers to Ellan Vannin, The Isle of Man. The skeddan referred to in verse 2 are herring, a very important part of the diet of the Manx in years gone by.
