Rinpoche points out that we have created the cause for all our suffering ourselves by our negative actions in the past. He takes the example of sexual misconduct to illustrate the four ripening results of karma. Being unaware of the law of cause and effect, people who have been abused in the past create even more negative karma by living all their life in hatred to the person who had abused them and also because of the forth ripening cause, the tendency to do the action again. And all this came from the ignorance of holding a truly existing I, the cause for all of samsara. It is said in the Bodhicharyavattara that you cannot receive harm that you have not caused to others. Not only has the person who we get angry with not caused our suffering, but he also will have to experience a lot of suffering himself due to his negative action. So we should generate great compassion for him. By thinking like this we transform all suffering into happiness. Through practicing lojong, giving and taking, we can then further develop our compassionate mind.
